Alabama
Tax Reform 2003
The
board of Greater Birmingham Ministries gave its support to the Tax Reform
package proposed by Governor Riley and as passed by the Alabama
Legislature. The board took this action because
-
The
reform package prevents the devastating effects of not addressing the $675
million dollar shortfall in state revenues, a shortfall that would have
unacceptable consequences especially for children, the elderly and those in need of
health care provided by the state.
-
The
reform package is a significant first step in bringing tax fairness to the
state tax code, which has been unconscionably unfair to the lowest income
people in Alabama
-
The
reform package offers the real possibility of improving state services,
particularly those of education and health care.
GBM
has produced several resources on the need for comprehensive tax reform over the course of many years.
