The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Unity Breakfast and Essay Contest
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Unity Breakfast is held at 7:30 am at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center each January on the Monday holiday celebrating Dr. King's birthday. Ticket information is available by calling (205) 324-8797.
Five community groups coordinate the Breakfast each year:
- Southern Christian Leadership Conference
- National Conference for Community and Justice
- Community Affairs Committee of Operation New Birmingham
- Greater Birmingham Ministries
- NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
The Breakfast Committee also sponsors an essay contest each fall in honor of Dr. King, and the winners are introduced at the Unity Breakfast the following January.
